Scrum Boards have been used to visually display a Sprint Backlog. It displays the items that were moved from the Product Backlog to the Sprint Backlog. Columns on a Scrum Board generally are associated with “To Do”, “Doing” and “Done”. Other columns may be added such as “Review” or “Verify”. The items start out as a “To Do” list. When a team member starts working on an item, it is moved to the “Doing” column. When that task is completed, and meets the teams Definition of Done, the item is moved to the “Done” column. The items in the “Done” column, reflect what is ready to be presented as part of the Sprint Increment in the next Sprint Review.

A Kanban Board is part of a just-in-time delivery system to keep track of what is needed, when it is need, and how many are needed. A Scrum Board uses the same principals to keep progress visible to everyone.

The board pictured uses sticky notes to represent tasks. The tasks can be grouped or categorized by using different color sticky notes. (This Scrum Board is a snapshot of a Scrum Board used in the Scrum via Sprints presentation.)

These are great for Scrum teams, but can also be used outside of Scrum. They have been used to keep track of general work tasks. During the week, you can add tasks that need to be completed, such as: create a report, schedule a meeting or order equipment. If you include a “Review” column, you can use that to indicate items you completed, but you are waiting for it to be reviewed by someone else. You can then use that column as reminders to follow-up on those items. The items on the board can be listed in the order of their priority, the sticky notes make it easy to reprioritize tasks. The board can be referenced to give a status update on what has been completed, what is in progress, and what will be worked on next. If the sticky notes are updated with when a task is completed, you can include that in with the status updates.

These boards can also be used at home for household chores. The board lists what needs to be done. Family members move a task to the “Doing” column, and to the “Done” column when the task is completed. Or have them put it under a “Review” column, until Mom or Dad verify it meets the Definition of Done, then move it to the “Done” column.
